Setting Up Your Own Excel Worksheet

Using Microsoft Excel® to determine remaining carrier tape on a used supply reel is easy.   To begin, you will need the pocket depth and pitch of your carrier tape.   You will also need to measure the amount of material remaining on the supply reel.   All numbers are referenced in millimeters. Proceed as follows:

Step-by-Step Instructions:
  • Open a new Microsft Excel® worksheet.
  • In cell A1 record the value in mm's of your remaining carrier tape by measuring the radius from the center hole to the outer wrap of carrier.
  • In cell A2 record the value of your carrier tape pitch in mm's.
  • In cell A3 record the value of your carrier tape pocket depth in mm's.
  • In cell A4 cut and paste the following formula:
  • =ROUNDDOWN(PI()*(A1^2-2581)/(A2*(A3+0.31)),0)
  • In cell A5 cut and paste the following formula:
  • =ROUNDDOWN(A4*A2/1000,0)
  • The value supplied in cell A4 will represent the approximate number of pockets that remain on your supply reel that has a 4-inch center core.   The value supplied in cell A5 will represent the approximate number of meters that remain on that same supply reel.
Keep in mind that these numbers are approximate.   This formula does NOT take into account any leader and trailer that you may need when taping product.   For other reel sizes, please contact us to request the proper formula by using our contact sheet.

Here Is An Example:
  • In cell A1 record 100.00 as the value in mm's of your supply reel's remaining carrier tape as the radius from the center hole.
  • In cell A2 record 4.00 as the value of your carrier tape pitch in mm's.
  • In cell A3 record 0.69 as the value of your carrier tape pocket depth in mm's.
  • In cell A4 cut and paste the following formula:
  • =ROUNDDOWN(PI()*(A1^2-2581)/(A2*(A3+0.31)),0)
  • In cell A5 cut and paste the following formula:
  • =ROUNDDOWN(A4*A2/1000,0)
  • The value supplied in cell A4 should be 5,826 pockets.
  • The value supplied in cell A5 should be 23 meters.
You may then proceed to adjust your inventory accordingly.   Remember to visit Reelpak.com if you want to sell this carrier tape through our REELpak® Exchange.   Details are available at the site.   Feel free to contact us for assistance.
